5 Ways to Pursue the Life of your Dreams

Tuesday, September 25, 2018

As I say goodbye to a Summer full of soul searching, I find myself entering Autumn with fresh new eyes and a long list of goals I've been diving into this past month.  Last September in 2017, I was given the opportunity to take on a full renovation project locally, that jump started a new venture I've been dreaming of for awhile. It tested every facet of knowledge and experience I've acquired over the years in design and as the project is wrapping up this season, it has already left me with an experience that will shift my life moving forward. Forward into a world I've dreamed of in interiors.

Ever since I was a little girl there have been two things that stayed with me throughout my life, and that's my entrepreneurial spirit and creating beautiful surroundings in the form of decorating.  I remember growing up closely with my aunt (my mom's sister), who was a designer and seamstress by trade. After spending weekdays after school with her, I'd sing & dance, and play make believe, while she'd pin fabric and sew her own clothing creations, custom drapery, and other home goods for her customers. We'd visit fabric stores quite often, and there I was, a young girl, getting lost in the aisles of fabric and trim from one end to the other.  She showed me the beauty of design, especially in the details that could transform something from ordinary to extraordinary.  If I could pin point where my love for design and style came from, it was during my time spent with her, my Auntie.

It was always hard for me to envision my life studying in college to pursue one career for the rest of my life and for me, it was studying pre-law/political science. Design was nothing more than a hobby, which I took full advantage of in every apartment and home I lived in! It was only in recent years that making a living from what you enjoyed was actually possible, especially if you were interested in a creative field, such as interior design. After digging deep into my soul, absorbing tons of outside inspiration and motivation, I finally understood that," Yes! This has been my calling all along and it's not too late to live the life of my dreams!"

So, today I'm sending you my love and support, telling you that it's never too late to pursue your dreams & goals! And this is how you can begin that journey ...

Be accepting to change, as we are meant to grow.

It's ok to start a new journey in life and sometimes start over, if we have to. We are constantly growing and evolving in this life. Our interests change, our style grows, and with that comes a wishfulness for something new and exciting. Life has so much to offer and you have so much to offer to your community! So why not explore more of those interests that you've been thinking so deeply about. And the best part about a dream, is that it's much more than an idea. It's a passion that's important enough to keep your thoughts filled with wonder. That in itself, is assurance and self-motivating that you are meant to do much more.

Take it one step at a time.

One of the things that has kept me from taking that leap of faith before (which is the same for many), is knowing that I have little ones to support and no room for failure. If this weighs heavily on you, then start off part-time in your new line of work. Even if it's the smallest step, that's better than not pursuing anything at all. This could involve reading about how to launch this new business venture and working at odd times of the day. On a lunch break, after the kids go to bed ... finding those little moments throughout the week is so important in turning those dreams into a reality. Your life will be a hustle and might be challenging to juggle at times, but with hard work comes great success.

There is room for everyone to flourish and prosper.

Always know that there is room for all of us to flourish in what we pursue. We can easily become intimidated by other's successes, but we can't compare our beginnings to someone else's middle. I learned this from an admired Interior Designer, Amber Lewis who made complete sense of it all.  It took years and sacrifice for her to get to the jaw dropping spaces she designs today, but I need to understand that I have to begin somewhere and I can't let intimidation take over the goals I have for myself. At that same token, you also don't need to have it all figured out before launching a new business either. Business is all about learning and making mistakes along the way. We certainly don't feel good about them in the moment, but we have to learn and make adjustments, if we want to become a better person from it.

God is in Control, so just have faith, believe, and pray.

Something that held meaning with me during a homily in church recently, is that God is in control. Being in my late 30's, I always want to know the outcome of my pursuits because I don't have all the time in the world to dilly dally with whether I will come out victorious or not. But sometimes we just have to let go and rely on our faith, believe, and pray that God will guide you every step of the way! It's a learning process to let go of your fears of the unknown, but also realize that God is in control and he will never let us fall. Just keep moving forward, start to replace your doubts with motivation & positive thought, and just do it

With that said, I too made my leap of faith by starting a new business in interiors called, Emmahlyn Living. A website is currently being worked on and hopefully in a few short weeks you will visually see the transformation unfolding when the website is live. I will continue to post here on the Pretty with Sprinkles website in the meantime and I look forward to finally pursuing this life long passion of mine. I have so much to offer with loads of personal experience over the years and I hope to start creating beautiful moments in other people's homes. I wish you all the very best sweet friends, in all your new endeavors!

Warmly ~
