Makeup Tips for Youthful Looking Skin

Friday, May 19, 2017

Ever since the beginning of the year, I wanted to switch things up and go back to wearing more natural looking makeup. I was in a pretty expensive phase for a good 2-3 years, purchasing makeup products left and right, thinking it was the answer to youthfulness. Plus, makeup was and still is something I really enjoy doing in the morning as my form of meditation. Anyone else feel the same? Is makeup, therapy for you?  Makeup is just a way for me to relax before the chaos of daily life and the end result is to hopefully feel confident and beautiful.

The only problem was, I was purchasing the wrong makeup for my skin. My foundation was full coverage when I didn't need it and I was wearing too many products when it really wasn't necessary. I decided to focus more on skincare and took it back to basics with wanting a more natural and healthy radiant look. I'm in my 30's and once you reach this age bracket, it's all about less is more. And it's so true! Looking back at some of my previous photos, I look more youthful now and it's because of a few simple changes I incorporated into my makeup routine.

Here are some helpful tips to achieve a natural makeup look that will make you look flawless and beautiful!

1.  Use a foundation with a more natural finish and don't pile it on. My favorite foundation at the moment is Giorgio Armani's Luminous Silk Foundation in 5.75. I've always purchased natural finish foundations because they are more second skin like and they're the perfect "in between" option (nothing too dull & matte and nothing too luminous that can accentuate texture). I have linked below a few other foundations that I love with medium coverage.

2. When you're in your 30's, fine lines and dryness seem to be more of an issue and the key to creating a flawless complexion is to use less foundation and spot conceal. If there's anything you gain from this post, I hope it's this! You really only need 1 pump of foundation; anything more will eventually look cakey. With my current foundation, I apply 1 pump of luminous silk foundation to my face, bringing it down to my neck, using my beauty sponge from Eco Tools (the best sponge). As a rule of thumb, foundation is really meant to even out your skin tone. From there, I move onto spot concealing.

For spot concealing, use a small brush, such as a concealer or eyeliner brush, to address blemishes and texture you wish to get rid of. My current holy grail concealer is the NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer in Custard.  A review of this product can be found HERE.  I adore this concealer more than you know and it covers everything I need without looking drying. This is truly a god send for those that have dryer or more mature skin. It's best applied with a brush and I also like patting it into the skin using my ring finger. Tip: Since it has a soft matte finish, I like to  apply a little where I tend to get oily throughout the day.  For me, it's down the center of my face (between my eyebrows, tip of my nose, and my chin.  This concealer controls the oil very well, where I only need to powder once in my long 10-11 hour day.

3. Apply your eyeshadow, blush, and highlighter with a light hand. Apply your bronzer as usual, whether it's to contour or warm up your skin. I like to be more light handed with everything else. Pinky nude blushes and less "in your face" highlighters, like the Illuminating Duo by Tom Ford, are what work best for everyday. You can definitely amp up the look for nights out, special occasions or when you're feeling daring. But for everyday, don't feel like to have to pack on the highlighter. Especially if you have texture or blemishes. Applying more product will bring more attention to these areas. Feel free to check out the highlighter options below that are slightly more subtle, but look gorgeous on the skin.

I hope these three tips helped you with creating a more natural and youthful look. All the products I've linked below I own personally and/or have tried myself. I highly recommend them all! Have a wonderful rest of your week and chat with you again soon!

Warmly ~

  1. Wonderful tips! I think my biggest flaw is not using concealer and over doing the foundation. Totally gonna try your concealer, especially around my oily T-zone! Always LOVE your cheeks... is there anything you do to enhance your cheekbones??
